How to Champion a Lifelong Learning Culture

In a recent blog regarding essential skills for leaders,  I talked about skill-based learning and defined a key action item to “Champion a lifelong learning culture.”

Below are some activities to help you serve as a champion.

  • Be curious and encourage curiosity.

  • Recognize and reward learning.

  • Offer tuition reimbursement and stipends to cover the cost of coursework.

  • Promote knowledge sharing among employees.

  • Encourage participation in community professional associations.

  • Promote a growth mindset with succession planning, training, mentorship and Individual Development Plans.

  • Start a book club.

  • Share your personal professional development goals.

  • Demonstrate personal practice for rest and self-care.

  • Focus hiring on individuals committed to learning.

  • Encourage job shadows and Gemba walks among peers.

As a leader you are key to defining the company culture and helping your direct reports grow.
