Essential Skills for Leaders - Developing Your Supervisors

Earlier this week I was talking with a plant manager about the frontline supervisor turnover he was experiencing. We reflected on the data and in a nutshell, it showed that the supervisors who had left were new to supervising working on the second or third shift.

I asked him if they received any leadership training or mentoring. He said they worked a few days with the first shift supervisor to learn about production, safety, and the computer system. They are short-staffed and it’s peak production season, so it’s hard to spend a lot of time training supervisors on how to lead people.

Having spent 10 years in manufacturing myself, I knew exactly how prevalent and painful this situation was.

We talked about the benefits of promoting internal employees to supervisor roles, how we could identify people who would be a good fit, and how we could help them prepare.

Do you find yourself in this same situation? Would you like to learn more about assessment tools that could help you, and get a free copy of my Individual Development Plan template?
