Effective 1:1 Meetings - Essential Skills for Leaders

What are the most important conversations you will have this month? You might be thinking about your boss, customers, or even your travel agent as we look towards summer vacation. The truth of the matter is it’s your one-on-one conversations with your employees. Never underestimate how much they value your undivided attention.

Regular check-ins contribute to significant improvements in these areas:

  • Connecting their work to a greater purpose

  • Enhancing accountability

  • Building trust and boosting engagement

  • Are you wondering what to talk about in these conversations?

  • Start with a well-being check, how are they feeling?

  • Next celebrate success, what's going well for them and what are they proud of?

  • Ask them how you can help? What obstacles might need to be moved?

I recommend meeting once per month with each employee unless the employee is new or has recently taken on a complicated assignment in which case weekly meetings may make more sense.

In addition to these check-ins, it’s important to set aside a separate block of time to talk about your employee's career goals and professional development. Do you have Individual Development Plans for each of your employees? We will tackle this topic later this week.
