Coaching Tips to Deepen the Learning

Coaching, mentoring, advising…are these terms synonymous? During a recent conversation with my own coach (who also has a background in human resources leadership) we talked about the skill of leadership coaching. I explained to her that I had done a lot of leadership and career coaching over the years. She said, “Susan, sometimes in HR we think we are coaching but really, we are more often advising.” I let that notion sit with me for a few days and began researching some refresher coursework in coaching.

I spent this past weekend in a virtual class around the fundamentals of Co-Active Coaching. It was exactly what I needed to up my game as a coach. At its core, it’s about the coach and client being “in it together.” Dancing in the moment to help the client bring about their desired transformation.

I was reminded of the power of deep listening…without distractions like thinking about the next question I should ask. Truly listening is one of the greatest gifts we can give another human.

After 20 years of coaching, job seekers, career changers, leaders, and aspiring leaders…these are the coaching tips on my post-it note in front of my computer screen:

· Ask for permission and establish rules of engagement.

· Listen actively and deeply.

· Stay present and future focused.

· Ask powerful questions.

· Focus on them, not your personal stories.

· Involve all the senses.

· Don’t fix it for them.

· Give yourself grace, every coaching session won’t be life changing or perfect.
