Be Bold
When I was working in Atlanta years back, some Learning & Development colleagues and I were having dinner at Ted’s Montana Grill when we looked across the room and saw Ted Turner eating dinner with a few friends. Ted is a media mogul who founded CNN among many other things.
One of my wise acre comrades dared me to get Ted’s autograph. He obviously underestimated my boldness. I immediately got up from my chair and began walking to Ted’s table. Of course, my heart was pounding and I ran through my request in my mind. I asked… Ted thought about it for a minute…and then he signed the coaster.
As I sat back at my table, I remember the pride I felt for simply asking for the autograph let alone the pleasure I felt having actually got him to sign it.
It’s that kind of boldness that has served me well on my career journey.
In honor of November being National Career Development Month, I am going to share three life-changing tips with you.
Be Open-Minded: Don’t underestimate any opportunity; say yes to projects that will stretch you and expose you to learning new skills. Even if you are given a project you don’t feel is important, make it shine. Be bold.
Stop Self-Sabotage: We all have that inner critic that at times tells us we are not good enough or we don’t deserve to be where we are. Focus on positive intelligence and appreciate what you have to offer.
Celebrate Where You Are: Pat yourself on the back, make a list of accomplishments, and treat yourself to a nice dinner. Do something to acknowledge all that you have accomplished each day. Waiting until the end of the journey is too late and makes the journey itself less enjoyable.
Remember, you aren’t just building a satisfying career, you’re building an extraordinary life.
